Best battery brand

Looking to buy a second 2s LiPo, who makes the best battery?

Nobody makes "the best" battery but there are plenty good ones to look for. SMC, SPC, Venom, and Maxamps have all been great for me. I like picking brands that have a customer service that actually exists, and is in this country. Most, if not all LIPO RC batteries are made in China.

for me, find whatever brand I'm comfortable and available with a reasonable price.. the essential thing is to care for a lipo (charging + storage + usage)


CMIIW it's like asking "what brand makes the best (on-road or off-road) car" - each in its own class

Use a bag to charge. Make sure your ESCs have LIPO cutoff activated.

and don't leave the house when you're charging you LiPo "thumbsup" and don't over-charge it.. when not using for weeks, do charge in "storage mode"

I use mostly SMC, good $, several choices, & many are hardcase. I balance charge every time, & always storage charge. I set most of my LVC's at ~3.4v(IIRC default is ~3.2v).

A lipo charge bag. I think most lipo chargers have a storage charge mode, lipos should be stored at ~50% charge.

Due to the potential for fire when using LiPo batteries, regardless of the likelihood, certain precautions should be taken. Always have a fire extinguisher nearby; it won't put out a LiPo fire (as I will further explain below, LiPo fires are chemical reactions and are very hard to put out). But a fire extinguisher will contain the fire and stop it from spreading. I prefer a CO2 (Carbon Dioxide) extinguisher - it helps to remove oxygen from the burn site, and will also cool down the battery and surrounding items. Another safety precaution is to charge the LiPo in a fire-resistant container. Most people opt toward the LiPo Bags on the market today, like the one pictured to the left. They are a bit pricy, but are more portable than other solutions. Finally, never charge your LiPo batteries unattended! If something does happen, you needs to be around to react quickly. While you don't have to always be in the same room, you shouldn't leave the house, or go mow the lawn, or anything else that will prevent you from taking action should the battery catch fire.

Helios RC makes excellent packs. Company is US-owned by an RCC supporting vendor. Packs are sourced from China as all are, but to very solid specs. I now run them in almost all of my rigs and have never had an issue. "thumbsup"

So I looked and u have a radient reflex charger, it's made for LiPo but there is no storage setting.... should I just discharge them when I know I won't be running for awhile?

I use Turnigy and Zippy batteries from HobbyKing. They work great, are very inexpensive, and I've never had one fail prematurely. I'd recommend them. There is absolutely no reason to waste money on expensive batteries these days. Just don't order no-name LiPo batteries from eBay.

Better be real careful using a discharge on whatever charger u have. Don't take your LiPo's cells below 3.4/3.8 VoLts which btw is a good voltage to leav them in storage. A simple volt meter can jump the balance plug on the batt to read each cells standing voltage. I find most of the time that when I'm done running my truck the battery is about perfect for storage, but I ALWAYS check the volts before storing. It's s good idea to check each cell individually before running as well to confirm u don't have one over charging which can make it more prone to exploding. Remember these suckers have burnt many houses down.....I keep mine inside an ammo can at all times.

I was just gonna run them till the truck stops, the wraith has a LiPo cut off in the esc

Wish the kid at Hobby town would have told me all this when I bought the dang thing, had no idea they were this dangerous. All my ammo cans are full of ammo BTW lol

They're not that dangerous, you just have to know what to look for. A LIPO battery won't just up and explode with no warning whatsoever. They puff, they get hot, that sort of thing. That's why you don't charge them unattended. Storing them in a LIPO bag is fine, you don't need to keep them in your fallout bunker to avoid torching your entire neighborhood.

I have a small 3amp charger that just charges through the balance plug, that doesn't have a storage or discharge. I still keep it to charge my battery from my fatshark goggles. You'll be good with a 50 watt balance charger for a while untill the cells get many and the mah gets large.
