Sorry I’m sure this has been asked many times…

I’m getting back into the hobby after a 10 year hiatus (career+married+kids), and I ordered a Gatekeeper Kit to build over the summer as it was a great price and I wanted something easy get back in with. I would like to go brushless with this build, but I have never ran brushless in a crawler. Looking for advice on what’s an affordable reliable system that will provide low end torque crawling, but also let me open it up and catch some air.

Figured I would add some pics of the build "thumbsup" working on the interior now with some 3D printed driver heads I got off Etsy :)

Any advice on gatekeepers is also welcome

Welcome back!

If you can find one, the Hobbywing fusion in 2300kv flavor is fantastic. It has the esc built into the motor and runs great in my 9 lb Bronco on 3s. Fully programable with a Hobbywing 1080 program card. I don't own a Gatekeeper, but I have run with one and they are pretty impressive out of the box. Btw that Redbull livery looks great.

Thank you! I’m really happy with how it turned out. I plan to fill in the side of cage behind the cab with a piece of styrene and a 33 for Verstappen "thumbsup"

I’m definitely interested in the fusion and have it set to alert me on amainhobbies when it comes in stock. My only question is if the ESC takes a shit, are you out the motor as well? Or can you repair/replace just the ESC portion? I think it’s a great idea, I just have had too many ESCs let the magic smoke out on me.

Damn that ESC is cheap! I would definitely try an outrunner out at that price. But the ESC would freak me out a bit, I’ll have to see if I can find more info on it.
i run 6 or 7 of those escs there alot quiter than the castle escs but the start up isent as good but its close 4 of them are with outrunners
ive been getting them for as low $13 straight from china

the esc is way over kill for that motor but they will both take 4s were as the lower powered cheap escs and outrunners only go up to 3s

I just ordered the ESC and outrunner you linked "thumbsup" I build racing drones also, so I’m no stranger to cheap Chinese ESCs. For the price it will be fun to play around with, and if I don’t prefer it in a crawler I have an old kyosho blizzard that could go brushless. Thanks for the advice!

in my opinion its a good combo i ran a 14t pinion with no coging for a while but it was way to fast even then the motor wouldent bog down even with a huge load on it

you should also pick up a programing card too if you dont have one already its.the same one as most of the other chinese escs use

For a real rock racer a cheap china esc and that 2200kV motor wont cut it.... I wouldlook out for some SCT Hobbywing combo ...thats the safest bet.

Would tend to agree here.

I have a Tekin RX4/2300HD ROC412 in my Ryft.
Put a HW SCT8 with a 3600kv combo in my Bomber. May swap these two around and go to a slightly larger motor on the HW setup.

2200 kv on 4s with a 3 gear style trans should hit 35-45 mph easy plenty of speed and more than enuff torque to turn a big pinion
i run 2200kv motors in both my yetis i run the yeti xl on the hammers trails the terrain that rig sucks up is mind blowing
