I've always wanted a CR-01 since they were first released, but I never pulled the trigger and I'm not sure why. I finally decided I had to have one one and started ordering 3Racing parts before I even had the truck kit. I had my mind set on the Bronco kit, but that changed when I found a great deal on this NIB Land Cruiser that included a bunch of NIP Tamiya hopups including the shock set. After I ordered the kit, I ordered even more 3Racing parts. This is going to be a heavy, shiny rig. I don't usually bling out my RC's. Instead, I upgrade to aluminum parts where I believe they will benefit most which is only a few spots. I understand the drawbacks of aluminum, but it looks so cool on the CR-01 that I had to do it. By the time I am done, I am going to have a fair amount of plastic parts leftover that will probably get me half of a second CR-01. Whether or not I turn the leftovers into a truck is yet to be determined.

I am going to post my build (my first build thread), but I am still awaiting the arrival of parts so my build kind of skips around rather than following the manual.

The box with awesome Tamiya art. I know everybody has seen this. Opening an RC kit is always exciting, but Tamiyas always seem to be the best. The packing is nicer than the rest and the cool art is a nice touch.

Here is the first round of hopups. The Tamiya parts were included with the purchase of the truck and the rest were purchased separately.

Second round of hopups.

First step was to assembly the stock Tamiya chassis with the 3Racing side plates. I love 3Racing products and their shade of blue anodizing is so cool.

Secondly, I built the axles and installed ProLine 2.2 Flat Iron tires on the optional chrome rims from Tamiya with 3Racing beadlock rings.

More parts arrived for the axles.

They sure look pretty now!

Next up I built the shocks. As I stated, I got Tamiya shocks along with the purchase of the kit, but I had already ordered 3Racing shocks before this. I've had great luck with 3Racing shocks, and their parts in general, and these fit the color scheme so I decided to use them. I like how 3Racing color coordinated the pistons with the shocks set. A simple, useless, but very cool touch.

The shocks came partially assembled (the o-rings and spacers were installed in the bottom of the body of the shock). The build was very easy and the shocks seem to work well.

That's it for now. The build will continue when I receive the rest of my parts.

That was a great find, some of those Tamiya hop-ups are not cheap! I've never seen the 3Racing knuckles and CHubs, they look pretty good!

Sweet start. These are super fun rigs, and their oddities add to the charm. "thumbsup"
Thank you! "thumbsup"

I like things that are different. That's a big part of the reason that the CR-01 appeals to me. The super scale (for Lexan) Tamiya bodies are another reason.

Thanks. I thought it was a great deal too! The Tamiya shock set looks great. The Tamiya driveshafts were also included and they're expensive. They're nice, but I am not sure I'm a biggest fan of the pin and setscrew that is used as a limiter to prevent the driveshaft halfs from coming apart. I used a ton of LocTite so hopefully they stay in there. If not, I'm not sure they'll be missed.

The only thing I don't like about the 3Racing knuckles is that they're universal and have that extra, unused arm hanging out the back. It looks goofy. The knuckles also seem to hit the C-Hubs sooner than they should which limits the steering throw. I may have to grind the knuckles and/or hubs, but I couldn't bring myself to do that yet since they are new and don't have any scratches on them! :lmao:

That's the way the stocker knuckles are too. Guessing you can break one side, flip it over and use the other. Or use it for a BTA steering set-up. :) (Which I tried and wasn't worth the effort imo)

I ground down my KM's, same reason. They were so thick, I got less steering. Way overkill. That was one good thing about the el-cheapo Integy knuckles - there was nothing to them. I got excellent steering out of them simply because they had more clearance. Of course, they bent/broke tumbling down our hill climb....good and bad I guess.

^ What he said. OSRC probably knows more about this platform than anyone here. FWIW, I read up on options to improve steering w/o going 4WS and wasn't sold on any good solutions. So I decided not to fight it and went 4WS, and couldn't be more happy that I did. Hacked FlySky makes it super easy to adjust the amount of rear steering on the fly. Completely solves the steering problem in a way that's consistent with its quirkiness. "thumbsup"

I'm working on a way to get universals up front. Started modding up some axial units....where there's a will, there a way. Nothing a little basement engineering can't work out. :) I'll post up when i figure it out.

In a new thread of course - sorry JTR, we're jacking your thread good sir. Carry on!

I don't take this as thread jacking. I like the tips and the feedback! "thumbsup"

Damn you, now I just went out and got some more goodies for mine. Building number three and it's coming along VERY well! Gonna be a good spring I think. Think the rest of your parts will be in by then? :)

Haha! Sure it's all my fault! "thumbsup"

At this point I have no faith I'll get some of the parts this year! :lmao: I got some painting supplies from Tower last night so I can start the body. Some more parts were delivered today. One shipment from AsiaTees and a tasty shipment from RPP Hobby, but it's not really going to take me much farther. I'm still awaiting shipments that are currently in Harrisburg and Jamaica, NY.

I over ordered one or two of the aluminum parts so I'll have those extras as well as all the plastic parts. A second CR-01 might be in my future.

Drive it first...they never seem to stay in the club for very long. Im the only jackass who runs them.

Let me know if you want some shock mounts, upper or lower - have various templates for them.

Lol. That's only partly true. I definitely enjoy running mine on heavy rocks more than any other rig I have, including my Wraith and SCX-10. So the CR-01 gets the nod whenever we're playing on serious rocks. My far less capable hard bodies (TF2 and G2) get the nod for trailing, which happens to be more often. Not yet sure where my Ascender will fit in. Now that's the sign of a sick puppy!

You'd fit right into our club, lol. We all have the sickness and more rigs than we know what to do with (My stable is 5 CC01's, 3 CR01's, 3 SCX10's, 3 Wraiths, 1 Ascender, XR10, Ridgecrest, Rock Force, Bruiser, Twin Hammers, Yeti, Exo, Hilift, Sawback, Summit, Telluride, and a few customs, Gelande is next, plus a ridiculous amount of non-crawlers collecting dust)

I've get to get a post up on my latest as well. Been slacking...

Funny, we can drive to Harrisburg in 2 hours, but it takes the post office a week to ship them. How's that work?? BTW, did you get the wheels assembled yet? I've got some HR beadlock rings on the way for the stock rims, but I think I like the looks of yours better. Can't get a good look at them in the pics.

I'll definitely drive my first one before building a second! I like oddities so I'm expecting and hoping to like this truck. I know I'm having more fun with this build than I've ever had before.

If I build a second I'd like to have this version with lots of aluminum and then one that's mostly plastic that I can beat on in my typical fashion. I'll definitely hit you up if I need any of those. Thanks!

When he said "club" I believe he meant our local crawling club not the CR-01 "club". "thumbsup"

The package went from Lehigh Valley to Harrisburg and now it's back at Lehigh Valley. The mail system doesn't make sense sometimes.

Yeah the Flat Irons in the picture are installed on the optional chrome Tamiya wheels with the 3Racing beadlocks. What is it that you want to see better? The beadlock rings? Let me know and I'll try to get better pictures tonight.

Here are better pictures of the Tamiya wheels with the 3Racing rings. I believe this is what you're looking for.

I really like the rings. They're fairly thick and have tabs that hang down into the wheel which even ads more rigidity.

Thanks for the pics - those look pretty good! Not sure I like them more than a standard ring style... But not bad...

I am extremely annoyed with the USPS. Every shipment that I've received lately has been delayed. This includes US-based companies from which I typically receive products in 2 or 3 days. My orders from overseas have taken forever and one still shows as being in transit. This shipment hasn't shown movement since February 18th so I am just assuming it has been lost. This means I won't receive some 3Racing items I ordered for this build. I couldn't wait any longer and I started finishing the build last night with the plastic parts. I'm anxious to get it finished because our crawling club has an RC show at a 1:1 car show this weekend. I'll post more pictures tonight.

I just upgraded to the 3Racing aluminum axle housings, but used KM Racing knuckles and hubs. The knuckles I have are not universal, so there's no unused portion sticking out the front of the rears.
