1981 Maico MEGA2 Promoto MX in da house.

HM Design Moto Grafx kit installed.
Thank Dylan, you knocked this out of the park. (Will chat soon.)
Then all hell broke loose. lol
Got to chatting with a few members on the LOSI 1/4 scale group, and decided to circumcise the plastics and grfx and get more of a retro look for my new not FXR any longer.
I give you the
1981 Maico MEGA2 490 PromotoMX.
Then after that was done to add to the retro look, I temporarily added some black vinyl tape to further simulate that old-skool full-length cushion seat. I'll paint this at a later date (maybe tomorrow) and do the front. Will need to add some red to the servo cover to further get that retro MEGA2 look.
I've got examples (pics) of 1:1s with Gold, Red(as shown), and silver swing arms, so I may just try to add some paint to this stock one for now. I doubt it would dye well. Trying to stay as 'stock' as possible as far as the bike itself goes, just add that old-skool appeal of my Dream Bike in 1981/2.

I also modded the stock front caliper by filing down the twist piston a little bit so it rotated freely in the caliper, then used some Emory cloth on it to help smooth it out after filing, then a cloth with WD-40 to condition it and keep it free moving.
When I reassembled it, I added more tension on the lever spring by making sure the caliper was fully opened, then installing the lever back about 1/4 turn from its operating position and put it to the operating area, and then fully pushed the horn onto the spline which put more tension on the spring and helps return the lever to fully open. Brakes work quite well and the caliper fully opens with pretty much zero drag on the front rotor.

More mods to do to further Retro my bike but this is a good start I feel.

Frame is almost fully painted. Need to do the rear side when I tear into it.

Good old Testors red paint to the detail rescue.

nice work!

Thanks. Just getting started.

Stuff for the build.

foot pegs

Rear pistons for suspension tuning and rear spring options as well

Hot Racing Ring Support rings that I painted Gold using Testors paint and my airbrush.

Treal Skids to help pull heat off the Gyro. Testors Red Paint for Fram Rails.

Treal Front Caliper. This piece works GREAT. No sticky caliper and hanging front brakes. Stock caliper will be repurposed for the rear brake with a F rotor and mounting bolts in an attempt to mod up a functional rear disc brake

These are with black rims for my Pro Circuit bike.

rear chain guard

Spare brake cable for the rear brake mod attempt.
LOSI Titanium fork Lugs and Axles.
Hot Racing .75 and 1mm chain adjusters (going to maybe use the 1mm set to make my Treal Swing Arm bolt adjustable for chain tension.

Stripped the gold anodizing off the fork tubes and polished them up to a nice shine so they look more like Chromoly Steel fork tubes.

F disc for the rear wheel for my rear brake mod attempt. Will need to make a mount that will allow me to mount the f brake caliper to the rear swingarm using the faux rear caliper mounting points.

All for now. More soon.

Don't go too crazy on the suspension. I remember bouncin around on them dual shocks.

Going for lowering COG. only adding a few parts at a time atm. Going to try to get some track time each month at a track they'll be having races at though the winter. Planning on softening up the suspension depending on how the weight bias shifts as I replace things.

Few more things done.

Treal Caliper in black and bottom fork mounts in red installed.
Rebuilt the LOSI forks and dropped to 37.5wt oil and medium springs.
Stock is 45w oil and hard springs both forks and rear shock.
The Fork shock setup also has the LOSI Titanium Lugs installed.

I drilled the top 1/2 of the standoff mount for the brake cable.
I used an 3mm bit and should have used a 2.5mm bit for those of you that may get one of the old style Mount/Lubs that needs to be drilled out.
I'm going to toss on a piece or two of heat shrink tube to fil in the gap and hold the sheath more firmly once inserted into the recessed mount for the brake cable.

The Treal Fork mounts/lugs needed a mod for the brake cable sheath as it was only slotted for the cable, not drilled down to allow the sheath to drop into the mount and be held inplace. I notified Treal and let them know of the issue and they said they already had it pointed out to them by another user and they are/have corrected the issue and they are now being drilled for the sheath to slip into.

Then I got a new work table which will make things much easier to work on.

Next I bought the Hot Racing Reinforcement Rings for the front and rear rims.
At first I thought there was a mnfr/design issue. I thought they used the stock rim bolt hole, but when I went to install them, I found the HR holes were not alinged to the stock rim bolt hole. This is why I thought there was an issue. The next day I took a 2nd look and realized they dont go through the stock bolt hole on the rims ,but the HR RR bolts straddle the stock bolt location on the rims and the Reinforcement Rings compress around the stock bolt locations opposed to through them as I first thought.

So I got them installed with a few pics to help others.
One other thing to note, the rear reinforcement rings have notches for the spokes on the stock rims. They dont align to just any location. When installing the rear reinforcement rings, move the ring around a spot or two to ensure the notches are properly aligned to the spokes in each notch. A misalignment will cause the ring to push into some of the spoke and dig into them most likely causing a weak spot in those spokes.

Metal Rear Disc (faux use). Stock has a plastic disc on the rear as it is not used and is non functional.

LOSI Gold Anodized Rear Sproket.
Treal just released a Titanium Rear Sproket and Front Disc I have on the way that will be put in the mix at some point.

This is a closeup of how the 2 Hot Racing bolts straddle the stock rim bolt position. Should also mention the Front ring has a notch on the back side of the ring that aligns over the stock cap screw on the rims. The other rings just aligns with any of the positions as the front rings do not get that close to the to spokes as to need a notch in them like the rears do.

As for these stock silver rims, they came off the new Pro Circuit I finally got a few weeks ago.
This bike was my original order I made on June 23rd from Amain. I bought a set of Black Rims and wheels and installed those on the Green Pro Circuit bike which was then put back into the box and put aside for now.

More later.

Did a little work on the exhaust to get more scale looking.

I'll finish off the top section with a little bit of formed lexan but just enough to make it look like the top, as to leave the cavity open for the lipo wires.

Treal Titanium Front Brake Disc and Titanium Rear Sprocket for the Green Pro Circuit Bike.
Fast Eddy bearing set for rebuilding/replacing bearings as needed.

Interesting path you are going
Looking to get that old school Maiko appeal happening.

All the little scale touches really make that stand out, nicely done!

They are the key points for sure.
Got a few more things to add.
Sent back 2 parts and waiting for Amain to get the new version of the 1 back.

Vitavon real spoke rims with Gold rim/hubs. They add a lb.

Spoke adjusting wrench

Scale round muffler. Ill like do some mod work to it to get the more old shool look to it like I had on the old one. Maybe just shoegoo a pipe in the end and make it easy.

Muffler installed.

Have a new front tire on the way, should be here next Wednesday.
Was thinking of E6000/ShoeGoo to glue them up, but I think I'll spend the cabbage and buy some Loctite 426 which is made specifically for sticking rubber to aluminum.

More as things come in.

Also been getting a few items for the Green Pro Circuit that I may start doing some stuff on tomorrow. It's still new in the box.

Been debating on just installing the spoke rims and a Treal Brake Caliper in Gold to the Pro Circuit and leaving it stock otherwise, barring new grafix and outfit likely.

More stuff for the bikes getting here.
Loctite 426 is made to bond Rubber and Aluminum so it should be perfect for the Vitavon rims and LOSI Tires.

They look Bad Ass, feel great. Need to balance them when I install them to see where they're at.

Thinking I will install them on the New Green Pro Circuit bike. I also have a Treal Gold Brake Caliper for it already so I can get a good comparison between the stock rig and the rig with the Vitavon rims on it. Next race is the 1-14, so in a few weeks I'll have a good idea.
Then I'll run the Maico in the actual Races and use the Green one just for track running to feel the rims. If it handles well, I may just race it.
